Palazzo: Tips and Suggestions for Staying and Playing

We just finished up a three night trip to Las Vegas and had another wonderful stay at the Palazzo. This trip was a last minute decision to celebrate Matt's birthday. We didn't really have a lot planned like we normally so we really just relaxed and enjoyed everything the Palazzo had to offer.

CHECK IN & ACCOMMODATIONS We had an inbound flight that arrived Monday afternoon. Once we landed and got to the taxi stand, the first thing we noticed was the desert heat! No matter how many summers we vacation to Las Vegas, we'll never get use to the 'dry heat'.

We quickly arrived at the Palazzo via taxi (about a 10 minute ride and $18 fare) and made our way to the lobby for check in. Their lobby is always beautiful, but this time was especially nice. They had life-size dolls covered in fresh flower dresses. They looked and smelled amazing. They change the flowers and the design every few days to keep them looking great.

Check in was very short and smooth. A very friendly young man named Michael was very helpful and courteous. We politely mentioned that we were celebrating a birthday this week and asked if he had any complimentary upgrades to help us celebrate. He looked around at his screen and since it was a weekday trip, was kind enough to upgrade us to a Siena Suite. This suite had a separate living and dining area, separate bedroom, huge bathroom and even an exercise room. Having stayed in their standard suite before, this was a treat. Not a lot of people know but every room in the Palazzo is a suite. This one just happened to be one of their larger ones. Nonetheless, we've never been disappointed with the rooms at Palazzo.

We get the question a lot on how to get free upgrades on rooms in Las Vegas. We've read and tried a lot of things, but what works best for us is a pleasant attitude, polite manners and a sincere appreciation of the person working the desk. Coupling that with a simple request if any complementary upgrades are available is all we've ever used. Over the last 15 years of visiting Las Vegas hotels, this approach has worked the best and been successful about half the time.

As noted, the room was amazing and accompanied with a breathtaking view of the Wynn and the golf course. One note of interest was the shower. You could have easily parked a golf cart in it, plus it had five shower heads (yes, you heard me right, five).

CASINO & GAMING When you visit the Palazzo or Venetian, make sure you sign up for their players promotion rewards card called Grazie. They have a wonderful program with tons of perks.

All your slot and table play are tracked and it's a very easy program to understand and use during your visit. Plus, you'll receive emails of all their upcoming promotions. We took advantage of the birthday promotion we received via email. It came with some free slot play plus a food and beverage credit.

During our stay, Grazie members could qualify for a daily small slot tournament. We qualified on two of the days and actually placed 3rd one day which paid $200 in slot credit. Not bad!

Both the casinos at the Palazzo and Venetian are similar and connected by an indoor walkway, so it's very convenient to move between the two. Both offer traditional table games and very modern slot machines. They are very well ventilated and easy to navigate.

One thing we wanted to highlight is the casino staff. The dealers at the table games were more than courteous. Win or lose at the tables, it's always more fun when the dealers are entertaining and cheerful.

The cocktail waitresses were wonderful too. They were very busy but amazingly fast and accurate with the orders. They even remembered us on our 2nd and 3rd day. One nice feature for ordering drinks was on the slot machines. You could order drinks right from the screen on the slot machines. Very high-tech!

The Grazie members staff was wonderful as well. They took their time to answer all our questions (and everyone else's) and made being part of the Grazie club well worth it.

Our main objective in gambling is to have fun and entertainment. That's exactly what we received the whole time we were there.

DINING & RESTAURANTS Generally the food in Vegas is always outstanding and the Palazzo has amazing choices and spectacular food. This trip we ate at I Love Burger, Grand Lux Cafe, Cafe Presse and room service.

Real simple, I Love Burger has the best burgers we've ever had. So many choices and combinations of ways to order burgers. Their parmesan French fries were the best too!

Grand Lux Cafe has the most diverse menu we've seen in Las Vegas (about 15 pages). So regardless of who you're dining with or types of food you're in the mood for, they offer a wide variety. Our meal comprised of fried pickles and calamari for appetizers, salads, BLTs and pizza for our main dishes. All very fresh and tasty.

Cafe Presse is where we had breakfast each morning as well as a quick bite to eat one night before bed. Historically food prices are inflated in Vegas, but Cafe Presse was not. Their coffee was very good and they had a high selection of pastries that we enjoyed each morning. The one quick late evening snack of a Caesar salad and prosciutto sandwich hit the spot! Again, all at a very reasonable price.

On our second night, we opted for room service. The menu options were pretty standard but the presentation and quality exceeded our expectations (or other hotel in room dining in the past). A steak sandwich, chicken fingers and chips were almost gourmet. When the food arrived, the gentleman quickly turned our small dining table into a white table cloth dining experience. The food was much better than we expected as well was the in room dining staff.

POOL AREA One of our favorite activities in Las Vegas is the pool. This was our first time to the pool area at the Palazzo. What's interesting is that their pools are connected to the Venetian's pool and vice versa. So your pool options are vast when you stay at either property. We got out to the pool early to beat the heat as well as the crowd.

After walking the entire pool property of both resorts, we settled aside a small pool at the Palazzo. What we really enjoyed was that the seating was not sardine style seating. If you get there early enough, you can find pockets of two or four chairs that are somewhat private. If you do enjoy the packed poolside lounging, that is available at the larger pools. What's neat about the Palazzo pool area is that the hotel actually cast a shadow over the pool area for the first half of the day. This comes in handy in 100*+ temperatures.

The pool staff was very friendly and happy to accommodate any thing you needed. One thing interesting was we never saw anyone running cocktails. Most all Vegas pools will bring you drinks, but I guess the place we found was too remote for even the cocktail waitress! Nonetheless it was a short walk for our must have Piña Coladas when poolside in Vegas.

IN GENERAL The Palazzo has quickly become one of our favorite places to stay in Las Vegas. We love the Italian style and architecture of the resort. A style that will never go outdated as several of the other theme resorts have become.

Vegas comes with some crazy characters sometimes, but we always felt safe and secure. While the property is huge, we found it easy to navigate and found everything we were looking for. The second floor is full of shops, restaurants and attractions. They even have a canal where you can ride authentic gondolas.

If you are a foodie then the Palazzo is for you. They have some amazing celebrity chef restaurants as well as quick dining options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They offer a wide variety of shows and entertainment too.

All in all, the Palazzo is a full service Vegas property that has all that you may want for a Vegas vacation. They seem to focus on superior customer service and providing a memorable vacation experience. If you've never been or looking for a new place to stay, we highly recommend it!
